Dis·cern /dəˈsərn/ — Verb: To perceive a critical difference; to distinguish.
"The way is broad, and the gate is wide, that leads to destruction," Jesus teaches. It takes discernment to stay on course and keep to the narrow path. Consider the experiences that come our way – whether they are interior thoughts or things that take place in the outside world. According to St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, the ability to ask "where is this leading me? Is it bringing desolation, or consolation?" is a key to staying on course. He counsels us to accept healthy consolation with gratitude to God, and to reject the desolation, just let it go, as not of God.
