Beginner Mind /bəˈɡinər mīnd/ –
Noun: An attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions, even when studying at an advanced level. From the term Shoshin (??), originating in Zen Buddhism.

The word thunk was originally used in computer programming circles to refer to an automatically generated "helper" subroutine, whipped up by something we call a compiler during the step between the moment the program is written and the time it is ready to be run.

When we look at our own mind as an inner landscape, then we begin to see that some of our thoughts come up automatically, and that some of these thoughts can drag you down. Thoughts affect behavior, and they also affect your physical health, including blood pressure and stress cortisol.

The growing field of cognitive psychology suggest that we can take charge, recognizing and exterminating Automatic Negative Thoughts, or ANTs, for our own wellness. Common ANTs include: overgeneralizing from negative experience, catastrophising, seeing things in terms of extremes, mistaking feelings for facts, and filtering so as to give greater weight to negative input.

Taking Charge of Thunks

Unless you think about your thoughts, they'll remain automatic. But you CAN take charge. Here are some good ways:

  • Ask the helpful question, "do I believe everything I think?" Pre-thought thoughts that can be recognized can be rejected, for greater well-being.
  • Stop taking an ant's eye view. Kill the personalizing ants by remembering it's not all about you. Everyone else is likely caught in the same ant's eye view. What is a point of view, after all, except a view from a point? So, take a God's eye view.
  • HALT. This stops the KNEE JERK ANTs when you remember to never make a decision when hungry, angry, lonely or tired. Step back. Five breaths. Sleep on it. Take a walk around the block. Take a cold shower.
  • Try affirmations, such as "every day, in every way, I am getting better and better, by the grace of God."
  • Cultivate a prayer life. A healthy prayer life will help you let go of blame and grow in gratitude. It will be easier to notice and crush the
    1. "Blame ANTS" … crush blame ants with forgiveness. The Lord's Prayer teaches that we are forgiven as we forgive, and to leave blame aside.
    2. "Always/Never ANTs" … crush these wallowing-in-self-pity ants, cultivating an attitude of gratitude. All things ultimately will work together for our good.
    3. "guilt shower ants" … the prayerful message that "God is Love, and I was created in God's living image. Jesus was willing to live and die for me because of His great love. He loves me still. There is no condemnation in Him. Only love and grace."
    4. Carnival ANTs – the mind-readers and fortune tellers. None of us can know the future, nor what's going on in someone else's head. You can't know why they're behaving badly at you, so don't assume anything about what that means about you.
