We’re so very excited about our latest partnership with YWAM Mumbai, to bring Pastor Fish songs and stories to kids living in the slums of Mumbai.
Eventually, we hope that these youth ministry resources in Spanish and English may actually give these kids a competitive advantage, as they’ll be among the very few kids to learn Spanish there in Mumbai – a special skill that should serve them well as they seek employment, later in life. Currently, we are looking at potentially translating these resources into the local language.
As of Summer, 2018, the youth ministry is just getting started. The new tablet devices were delivered and the software was installed in India without any issues. Below, a few of the students, getting to know the app:
When Muthu and Kavitha, with whom we partnered to start the W.I.S.E. Sewing-skills ministry for widows in Trichy, moved to Mumbai in 2017, we equipped their ministry with new tablets, to help them achieve their vision to teach the children in the slums of their new city of 24 million people. As they establish their ministry, they are looking to serve “the Widows, those affected with HIV/AIDS, the Blind, Lepers, Slum Dwellers, Orphans, the Poor Women, the Daily Laborers, and the Physically and Mentality Handicapped” (their website).
Partner Status – May 2018
Muthu writes: “It is working perfectly. The children are enjoying it. We need to translate it into the local language. Otherwise it works great. We introduced Pastor Fish and the children were very happy. They are slowly learning various episodes. We hope to use this tool to various slum communities and homeless children.Thank you very much for blessing these children. May God bless you. ”
Mumbai is a city in India situated along the ocean, characterized by great beauty as well as great poverty. The capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra, Mumbai is actually on an island – the Salsette or Sashti Island, at the mouth of the Ulhas River on the western coast of India. Mumbai, once known as Bombay, is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the west. Mumbai “boasts” the world’s third largest slum – Dharavi – with over 1 million residents, as highlighted in the film Slumdog Millionaire. With an ever-increasing cost of living, an ever-increasing number of the city’s 24 million residents – over 5 of 24 million – live in slums.
About the Pastor Fish Project
Meet Pastor Fish, Barni Barnacle, Wigbert the Whale and the minnows of the Sunday school of fish, as you listen and learn about parables and stories from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. A fun and whimsical presentation of Gospel songs and stories for children and the young at heart, Pastor Fish is offered in a children’s radio show format complete with fun “commercials” and jingles, weather and even traffic. The app has educational games and English/Spanish content, too! Following along with the songs and stories, kids internalize positive messages, feeling a greater sense of God’s love and care for them. (Online Resources: English/ Spanish / Teacher Pages / Russian / Ukrainian).
